Single Review:
Sophia Scott - Tumbleweed

December 6th 2024

It's a bold claim to say it's her best single yet, given her catalogue of music, but we said what we said and we're sticking with it. Following an incredible SOLD OUT headlining show at Colours Hoxton on Tuesday night, Sophia has just surprise dropped her brand new single, ‘Tumbleweed’ which is out now, via Empire. Unlike her previous single, ‘Buy A Round,’ an up-tempo party track, ‘Tumbleweed’ is a stripped-back, guitar ballad that really makes space for Sophia’s stunningly powerful vocal to soar and shine through. It’s a complete 180 to ‘Buy A Round,’ which is awesome in its own right, but releasing ‘Tumbleweed’ as the following single showcases the incredible versatility Sophia has as not just as a singer but a songwriter as well.

‘Tumbleweed’ is a co-write with two more fantastic songwriters in Ava Suppelsa (Carly Pearce, Flatland Cavalry) and Ross Copperman (Luke Bryan, Keith Urban). The former of which was on hand in London on Tuesday night to perform background vocals.

Tumbleweed’ weaves the tale of a free spirit: “I’ve always had one foot out the door / My boots have been broken in / From all the searching for something more / chasin’ that river again,” who finds love in someone who accepts her for exactly who she is while also providing her with that safe place to come back to: "I’ve always been a blackbird on a breeze, but baby you rope the wind, oh I’m a castaway at sea, but you bring the tide back in.” There’s a lot of beautiful imagery woven into the lyrics: blackbirds and rolling tides, smoke and untamable flames, tequila and sunrises, which all weave together to bring the narrator to the conclusion that “only you could go put some roots on a tumbleweed.”

Scott, being that metaphorical tumbleweed, delivers a stunning vocal performance that really showcases her incredible vocal range. The Nashville-based, Colorado-native is a real triple-threat in the country landscape: a talented musician in her own right, a gifted singer and performer, and an unbelievable songwriter with a real knack for soulful storytelling. She’s kinda like a little bit of Lainey Wilson, Kelly Clarkson and Fletcher all rolled into one, and there’s no one else doing it in country the way she is right now. Which is probably why she made the ‘Artist to Watch’ lists for both Pandora and Nashville Briefing this year.

For anyone who missed Sophia’s show earlier this week, don’t even worry about it because your girl’s got you; she’ll be back this side of the pond at least twice more in 2025, playing C2C Festival in Rotterdam and Berlin in early March, before coming back to headline Roadhouse Weekender over the 4th of July weekend.
